checking out volunteers

Has anyone any suggestions as to how we can check out volunteers? If someone unknown to us volunteers to work in our shop, how do we go about checking whether they are honest?  All I can think of is we get referees, but I wondered if anyone else has any suggestions, please.

This is a tricky one, be it in relation to volunteers or paid employees (or indeed any type of relationship). Personally I've always worked on the basis of trust, i.e. I will trust people unless and until they breach that trust. Very, very occasionally that approach costs me, but the benefits far outweigh the costs. Some of the best and most trusted friendships I've had over the years are with people that have previously fallen foul of the law for all sorts of reasons, so having a criminal record is at best only a vague indicator of honesty and trustworthiness.

I agree with Graham - as far as volunteers are concerned in most cases you have to be grateful that someone is interested. We have been going for 6 years and have 50 volunteers - as far as we know there has been no dishonesty. I would say go for it
