Home delivery service

We are keen to drive extra sales at Ropley. Currently we do not offer a home delivery service. Is this profitable. Does it add trade?  We would welcome ideas or comments.

At our shop we've been considering home delivery for a while, and are finding it difficult to make it stack up financially. If you've got a volunteer driver and your delivery journeys are short then it could work, but if you are paying for a delivery person and/or you may be anticipating round-trip journeys of maybe 5 miles or more then it starts to get expensive to run. The delivery charge that may be able to make also needs to be proportionate to the value of the goods being delivered, which can add further pressure: e.g. no-one is going to be too happy paying a £5 delivery charge to have £5 worth of groceries delivered. For now we have limited our delivery service to a brief trial spell in the run up to Christmas, and we provide free delivery to a few customers with limited mobility.

Hello Jayne

I have heard of one shop in particular that offers a home delivery service which definitely attracts attention. Have a look at the Chalford donkey project blog here. However it may not be the solution for everybody!

Harriet

I am working with a shop that would like to offer a home delivery service either by a volunteer delivering to the elderly by car or paying someone, maybe a youngster in the village to deliver by bike.  They would like to know if anyone has experience of this and what their experience has been.  Are their any implications they should be aware of?

Thank you,

Donna
