Local Food Producers

I run a village shop and I'm looking to source local producers. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best places to identify them? Is it good to approach producers directly?

Hi,

There are a number of ways you could do this to start with I would suggest the following:

  • If you have a local Farmers Market or Country Market its worth a visit as its a good way to meet producers face to face and talk to them about what products they feel would work in your shop.
  • Talk to your current suppliers it may be that they can already offer you a range or can point you in the right direction.
  • Look at what other shops in your area are doing and talk to them about what works for them and what does not, it may be that you can help each other to build up your local food ranges.
  • There are also a number of sites on the internet that can help with sourcing local producers I would suggest starting with Big Barn - www.bigbarn.co.uk or SALSA - www.salsafood.co.uk or the Soil Association - www.soilassociation.org .

Finally if you feel you would like some more support or advise on this why not think about joining the Look for Local Scheme details can be found via the following link http://www.makinglocalfoodwork.co.uk/about/cslf/Rollout.cfm .

Good luck!

I've found a good local food guide produced by NFU for Yorkshire ... please have a look at the attached file.
