Epos software choices and experience

We are looking to upgrade our 2 year old epos system fromiTouch.

Any advice as to good intergrated software being used?

Hi I posted an epos question

Hi I  posted an epos question last November and found the replies very helpful

I think the replies are saying in a low margin enterprise such as community shops they are invaluable, but and its a huge but, they have to be good systems installed well and especially trained in well.

We are keen to install and I woundered say 10 shops combined we could get a system tailored to the needs of the community shop and a training package  that would reflect the needs of volunteers( evening training etc)

Are any others interested and does anyone know anyone who would get fulfillment out of acting as project manager!?

I think this approach makes a lot of sense. As I recall, in the original thread on EPOS I posited the idea of developing a tailored solution based on an open source system that I know of, and that remains an option worthy - in my view at least - of serious consideration. I also heard a rumour somewhere that the Co-operative Group may be offering its EPOS system for sales to other businesses. Of course it may be wholly inappropriate, but it does (I assume) handle the concept of member dividend, which would of interest to my shop, and presumably other cooperatively structured shops in this network?

Yes i recall your suggestion and a good one! Does anyone know if the rumour is correct? or is it worth an approach to the Co-op. You must be doing well if you are building in the facility of members dividend. We paid out twice but that was a few years ago!

Having worked in co-operative retail until last year, I'd have to say that the kind of epos system used by a retailer of their size would be far too large and complex for the needs of all but the largest village shops. Plunkett would be happy to raise the issue with Co-operative Group if network members wanted, but I honestly think that this is not the right system for community-owned shops.
