vetting volunteers
We plan to open our shop in 2 months. It has been suggested that our volunteers will need CRB clearance and references. Some of our volunteers will be aged 14-18 and obviously we hope to have children amongst our customers. What have other shops done?

CRB Checks. What an interesting question. I don't know of any community-owned shop that has done CRB checks nor heard of any debate about this. A quick look on the internet doesn't yield anything obvious either and hence I guess your question. If there is a shop out there who has done CRB checks then please do get in contact.

If your store is to have a Post Office, then all members of the team who may work in the Post Office will need to be vetted by Post Office ltd. From my previous life in retail we did not CRB check prospective members of staff,

I can't see why you would need CRB checks, as no-one is actually working with children or vulnerable adults (such as in a playgroup, nursery or if you were a driving instructor). Do take a look at http://www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk/using_the_website/general_information.aspx for more information.
None of our volunteers has been asked to be CRB checked, but then none of the other volunteers are under 18 (we sell alcohol and tobacco products, which prevents this). However we do have Duke of Edinburgh Award teenagers helping out in the shop from time to time, just not behind the counter. None of them would be classed as "vulnerable" though.
Hope that helps!
Good question, does anyone undertake police clearance for volunteer drivers product delivering to vulnerable people in their local communities? We haven't started this . yet but hope to offer a servcie in the spring Lesley
