Skill sharing website, KnowHow NonProfit, have produced a series of governance podcasts called 'In the Chair' that explore how non-profit and charity Chairs are helping their organisations and fellow board members deal with times of crisis and change.

KnowHow NonProfit is a new website built solely for people working in not for profit organisations. Completely free and easy to use, it is packed with practical information and resources covering all kinds of topics from finding funding to strategy planning. You can use the forums to ask questions, discuss issues and share your own experience. There are also podcasts of events, a calendar of conferences and courses stretching across the UK and their own fortnightly non-profit story 'Millcaster Tales.' The site is intended to be a friendly and useful space for a community of non-profit people and organisations to share what they have learnt and to help others.

LawWorks is a charity which aims to provide free legal help to individuals and community groups who cannot afford to pay for it and who are unable to access legal aid. In the last year LawWorks helped provide free legal advice to over 40,000 people and around 350 voluntary sector organisations.

They work with just under 100 member law firms and teams of in-house counsel, as well as mediators, law students and solicitors who have been made redundant involving them all in pro bono work.

Free online service to help compliance with human resources and health and safety legislation

Charity Builder UK is a free, online service which can be used by all not-for-profit groups including charities, community groups and social enterprises. The service has been funded by Capacitybuilders, and developed in recognition that small and medium sized charities often find it hard to comply with Human Resources and Health and Safety legislation – two notoriously difficult, time consuming and costly areas of essential administration which increasingly need to be demonstrated as part of funding applications.

Get Legal
Find the form that fits: expert advice online for charities, social enterprises and co-ops

Get Legal is a new online tool created by NCVO with support from law firm Bates, Wells and Braithwaite (BWB), to help new organisations decide which legal model to adopt.

Get Legal offers clear guidance and information about governance and legal structures. It aims to help individuals, organisations and advisors to make informed decisions as they set up and develop charities, social enterprises and co-operatives. It also explains a range of legal forms in detail.

The Resources section of the site contains information on where to go for further advice and support, a glossary of terms and case studies to bring the legal forms to life. It also provides standard documentation and explanatory notes, which can be downloaded.

The Legal Journey section does explain (briefly) unincorporated bodies as well as seeming to cover all possible forms of incorporation (limited liability).

To access the Decision Tool you have to register (this is free) and by registering you will be able to access special features and begin your journey to understand what sort of form fits your needs).

As an IPS not for profit organisation I am interested to know if it is necessary to register our membership list with the Information commissioner's office ( ICO).  What is the practice of other community shops?

I look forward to replies
