Daily Papers - Minimum Entry Level

Hi all,

I can't get a straight answer from WHSmiths - what's the MEL for a new business?

Also, how much is the monthly charge?

thanks

I'm afraid you need to persevere with Smiths News - their ways are weid and wonderful but they have a monopoly and you have to deal with them. MEL seems to variy depending on location, as does the weekly delivery charge, although most shops find the latter to be £25 to £35 per week.

If this is a problem, then subretailing is sometimes an easier way in.

Have you tried Menzies? Although they have an MEL, they waived this for us because we are a community shop. They also allowed us to enter immediately into sale or return whereas for a normal retailer I understand  they introduce this only after an initial period. We pay around £25 per week for delivery.

If you decide to go into sub-retailing make sure that you get a reasonable share of the profit.

 Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions.

As the monthly charge was going to be £34, we decided to go down the sub-retail route with a local delivery chap. we'll buy a small number of papers and test the market, and he'll do the weeklies and magazines for us.

We will review this down the line.

Thanks again,

Matt
