I have quite a contact list of refrigeration suppliers
Capital Cooling 01506 859848 www.capitalcooling.com
Lowe Refrigeration 01283 820717 www.loweref.com - you can also rent from these guys
one of my Post Offices has purchases almost all of his refrigeration off e-bay!

It might be worth contacting staff at The Shop at Strood Green on stroodgreenshop@gmail.com for comments on Capital Cooling as they have very recently purchased a multideck chiller from them.
A few useful suggestions from Plunkett's Community Retail Advisers include:
Shop Equip is useful for all kinds of equipment.http://www.shop-equip.com/ 0845 400 1050 (Ian Toye)
The Carbon Trust, are usually able to recommend some suppliers. They can be contacted on 0800 085 2005 (Charlotte Foster)
The co-operative group and co-operative societies often employ regional refit managers who will be able to offer second hand equipment. (David Fisher)
thanks James. Shop equip are good, but only go up to 1.3m wide for their units. their 750 litre unit uses 12kW every 24 hours. this energy rating and usage is really hard to find on the net, but it is essential info for shops!
Does anyone have experience of chillers with sliding doors across the front, instead of open at the front? Do they restrict retail sales? Do they put people off? open chillers (even new ones) seem to run at 2 - 3 kw constantly, which at 12p a unit is over £7 a day. Its quite a dent in the profit from the chiller at 30% mark up you have to sell £25 worth of goods to cover the electricity!
thanks
Matt
Jonathan James has installed 'doors' on his fridges, he runs a chain of stores in East Anglia, I will try to find the information and pass it on to you
Plastic strips
Why not try transparent plastic strips instead?
I have no experience of these from OUR shop but have seen them elsewhere and they seem better than sliding doors. You can just reach THROUGH them.
We were trying to get some fitted to our open chillers - NOT easy. But it might work for some. We know of a supplier.

As regards eco-friendly chillers, Woodgreen in Hampshire, after much research, decided on two 2.5metre Arneg chillers with remote compressors. They are on the low carbon list and will attract Enhanced Capital Allowance under the terms of a National Lottery grant. They had to get competitive quotes and found there was quite a difference in prices for the same equipment from different suppliers. They went to local companies only, but got a comparison from one near London which appeared to be cheaper, but wasn't in the end.
this is really helpful Helen - thanks very much. great to know about the ECA as well.

Remote = external?
Are remote compressors = external compressors? Ie ventilating to the outside rather than into the shop? We are just considering that because our building is wonderfully insulated which is great in the winter but in the summer means it gets too hot with all the fridges and freezers churning away.
If external, is it easy to install? Does it look ok - I once saw those units at a fair and the ventilation unit seemed bulky, ABOVE the chiller, not all all attractive. And how much more expensive than a chiller that ventilates internally?

You have picked up on the major drawback to the integral fridge units, the do generate a lot of heat, which may be a problem in the summer as most UK specification fridges are only designed to work an an ambient average temperature of 25oC.
Additionally there is the knock on affect on other fridges and they end up in a vicious circle of working harder to cancel out the heat the generate.
Certain products are also very temperature sensitive - chocolate and eggs.
On the other hand the remote fridges are more expensive to install, you may have noise issues with your neighbours which in turn may cost more in sound proofing and customer disatisfaction. There may also be considerable building disruption as pipework and ducting have to be routed through the building.
Experience with external chillers?
Thanks, Ken. Do you have actual experience with external chillers?
We have no neigbours, so noise not a problem. Our chillers are against an outside wall away from where people see, so looks not that worrying either. I thought the ducting would just go through the wall?
Which shop is yours - near us??

I used to be the audit controller for Somerfield looking after food safety etc, so my experience is gathered from there. I live in Bristol but work in London.
It should not cause you a problem if you can just go through the wall, it is worth remembering if the condensers are in full sun they will have to work harder in the summer
I can call in if you like I usually work in Bristol on a Friday
Very kind of you to contribute in this way then!
If you would LIKE to drop by, great. my email address is gitte@galleriesshop.co.uk, Tel 01225 722511.
I'm not always at the shop, I only chair the management committee.
Kind regards
