New development provides ideal location for village shop
The village shop in Ascott was part of a local farm selling a few basics. When the owner dies, the shop died with him. Ascott had been without a Shop for five years when an opportunity arose in 2003 to provide a new one in conjunction with a new development of Houses that were to be built in the High Street. It was agreed that it would be owned and run by the residents of the Village as a Community Shop. With a very tight timescale – just over 6 months – the village set about fund raising, obtaining grants and getting volunteers to fit out the shop. They took over the building as a shell and had to provide all the services – Electrics, Heating and Plumbing, Plastering, Flooring, Woodwork and Decorating and then provide the Shelving and Freezer/Chillers before the shop could be fully stocked. This was all achieved and in November 2003 the new shop was opened and trading began thanks to the huge effort from the volunteers.
Bridgette Crundwell, chairman of the management committee commented, "Being involved in the shop has changed lives. The shop is the heart of the village, it really is."
